Rich, famours, and beautiful. She had been a ballerina when a duke fell in love with her and chose her to be his official maitresse. He paid for everything – a giant apartment, servants, jewellry, amazing gowns, parties… but freedom was scarce. The duke was a jealous man and had people keep an eye on her. Yet, still she managed to aquire a secret lover – a master of disguise. Adeline’s papa. The duke never found out; he was sent to war in Africa and never came back. Adeline grew up in luxurious surroundings in a posh Parisian neighbourhood with a governess and dance classes and piano playing and playdates with her peers on visiting days.

When Adeline was seven her maman became ill. Very ill. Adeline was sent of to the best boarding school for girls in Paris. The last holidays in Paris had been trying. Her governess took no interest in Adeline, only in a young man called Pierre. That meant visits to the same park at the same time every day, waiting for hours while the governess canoodled with her Pierre while Adeline was bored out of her mind.

For a girl of seven or eight years old there is not much to do. You can read, walk in the park – with the governess of course – maybe feed the birds. You can sit still and look pretty and keep quiet. Only the books were any good. They could take you on adventures, make your boring life go away for a while, and you could learn all sorts of interesting things. Unfortunately, mostly things girls were not supposed to like. Science and exploration and stuff like that. But Adeline could dream herself away from the governess and the park, when she was sat there for hours. At school everything was planned, including reading time, but at least there were no restricitons on subjects.

Adeline used to have a best friend till she confided in her about her maman’s illness and that her papa would come for her. Then her best friend had laughed her head off and that was the end of that friendshop.

And then her maman died. And her papa did come for her and took her away to a new and very different life in Copenhagen. Three years ago now. Andeline got a new family and a new maman and lots of freedom. Her new maman is a forensic scientist and even lets Adeline do her own experiments in the lab. The rest of the family are just like Adeline. Funny, exuberant, intelligent, musical, creative, strong-willed, curious, wise, tolerant and eccentric to say the least. Here she fits right in. Belongs. She can ask a million questions a day and always get an answer.

You can read more about Adeline’s parents on Lendorph & la Cour (based on real crime cases) and read about her all grown up as a detective in the Merkantia series.

Daughter of Giselle de la Motte and Christian la Cour.
